In Victorian England (1837-1901), the period that inspired "Elastos," our new boot for this season, the Industrial Revolution reached its peak, and mass production of daily necessities, including clothing, began. The American Civil War (1861-1865) occurred in the middle of this era. This was the only and final civil war in American history after its independence, sparked by the conflict between the Northern United States, which needed to develop industrialization to compete with England, and the Southern Confederate States, which sought to maintain slavery for the operation of their large plantations.
The Union Army Cavalry Jacket is based on the jackets worn by cavalrymen of the Union Army during this war, made into a lightweight jacket with cotton pique material. Although this garment was originally a wool military uniform, mass production systems were not yet fully established at the time. It seems that individual tailoring was common, and specifications varied among state and regional units, resulting in a variety of styles. We used common styles found in Union Army cavalry uniforms of the time, such as a slightly tighter fit, a stand collar, a classic back pattern, and decorative cuffs, to create an unlined cotton pique jacket that can be casually worn over a T-shirt or work shirt.
