Until the middle of the 19th century (around 1840-60), the northeastern and inland areas of North America were uncivilized land inhabited by Native Americans, even though they were French territory. The French first invaded the area, hunting beavers and trading with the Native Americans. It was only at the beginning of the 19th century, when Napoleon ceded the territory to the United States, that they were replaced by Americans. These people, who mainly caught beavers by trapping, were called "trappers" in English.
There is little information available about what clothes the trappers wore.
The first half of their era was before cameras and photographs existed, but even after that, there are not many photographs left, probably because the harsh land where they lived was not easily accessible to photographers. However, it is highly likely that trappers, who lived in a land rich in wild animals and had no shortage of leather and fur, wore leather vests. This trapper's vest was designed with the image of a trapper wearing a leather vest from the mid-1th century (around 1840-60). The material is shrink-shrunk goat leather. This soft leather, characterized by its thickness and natural grain, was used to create a tight-fitting vest with a tight crew neck.
