The 2 Monkeys Trappers Vest [TM83529]

Until the mid-19th century (around 1840-60), the northeastern to inland regions of North America, though French territory, were undeveloped lands inhabited by indigenous peoples. French trappers were the first to venture into these areas, engaging in beaver hunting and trade with the natives. Americans replaced them at the beginning of the 19th century, after Napoleon ceded the territory to the United States. Primarily catching beavers with traps, they were known in English as "trappers."

There is not much documentation regarding the clothing worn by these trappers.

The first half of their era predates cameras and photography, and even afterwards, it seems few photographs remain, perhaps because the harsh lands they inhabited made it difficult for photographers to accompany them. However, it is highly probable that trappers, in a land rich with wildlife and abundant in leather and fur, wore leather vests. This Trapper's Vest was designed while imagining what a trapper wearing a leather vest in the mid-19th century (around 1840-60) might have looked like. The material is shrunken, tightly-grained goatskin. This soft leather, characterized by its thickness and natural grain, was used to create a tight-fitting vest with a close-fitting round neck.
