The 2 Monkeys' new Phantom boots are based on boxing shoes from the first half of the 20th century. This design, with large vamp panels covering both sides, began to be used in shoes for indoor sports such as boxing, wrestling, and basketball in the late 19th century. By the mid-20th century, it was also incorporated into work boots (commonly known as monkey boots) and continues to be widely used today as one of the sneaker designs. The 2 Monkeys Phantom uses an oblique last, extending the vamp to the toe, mirroring a design commonly seen from the 1910s to the 1930s. The leather for both the upper and lining is horsehide. For the upper, we use horsehide impregnated with animal oil and softened by hand-rubbing, while the lining uses lightweight, breathable off-white horsehide. The thin, flat sole is attached with a McKay stitch. The black version features a brown core, and since the base color is dark brown, the brown core's appearance is natural. The oblique (foot-shaped) last, large side panels (vamp) extending to the toe, and 12 pairs of large eyelets with round laces. These upper designs are not what are commonly called monkey boots, but rather reproduce the athletic shoes from an earlier era that served as their design source.

The leather is horsehide with a moist, supple feel, similar to what was used in athletic shoes of the past. It is impregnated with plenty of animal oil and finished by hand-rubbing, making it soft and highly adaptable to the foot. Natural grain, creases, blood vessels, and scratches, which are inherent skin patterns of leather, may be present, but these contribute to the unique texture of horsehide. The lining is off-white, raw-finish (unprocessed grain) horsehide. It's a lightweight and highly breathable lining material often used in athletic shoes. The toe, which contains a soft leather toe cap, will flatten with wear. The black leather features a brown core, allowing you to enjoy the natural tone of the brown core as it ages.

The flat sole provides excellent grip. The material was selected to add practicality to the boxing shoe style.
