The 2 Monkeys' new collection, Phantom, is inspired by early 20th century boxing shoes.
This design, with large panels (wain leather) covering both sides, began to be used in indoor sports shoes such as boxing, wrestling, and basketball at the end of the 19th century, and was also adopted in work boots (commonly known as monkey boots) in the mid-20th century. Using a shaped last, the leather is extended to the toe, creating a design that was commonly used from the 1910s to the 30s.
The upper leather is horsehide on both the front and back. The front leather is horsehide that has been soaked in animal oil and kneaded to soften it, while the lining is made of lightweight, breathable off-white horsehide, and a thin, flat sole is sewn on using the McKay method. The black version has a brown core. The base color is dark brown, so the brown core looks natural.

The oblique last (a shape similar to the shape of the foot), the large side panels (waist leather) that extend to the toes, and the 12 pairs of large eyelets and round laces—these upper designs are not typical of monkey boots, but are a reproduction of the athletic shoes of old that inspired the design.

The leather is a soft, supple horsehide, similar to that used in athletic shoes of the past. It's infused with plenty of animal oil and kneaded for a soft, comfortable feel. While the leather may have natural grain, ribs, blood vessels, and blemishes, these are all part of the unique texture of horsehide. The lining is off-white, unpolished (unfinished) horsehide. This lightweight, breathable lining material is commonly used in athletic shoes. The toe, fitted with a soft leather toe cap, flattens with wear. The black leather has a brown core. It's a dark brown leather base dyed black. Enjoy the natural brown core aging process.

The flat sole provides excellent grip. The material was selected to combine practicality with the style of boxing shoes.
