Shop coats have been around since the end of the 19th century and are still highly valued in modern workplaces as workwear worn over everyday clothes to protect against various types of dirt, such as oil, while in this case, "shop" means a workshop, but in Japan, French shop coats are called atelier coats, with "workshop" replaced with the French word "atelier" (officially called blouse de travail, or work blouse).
