The 2 Monkeys 1735 Linen Coat [TM82440]

In 18th-century Europe, men apparently wore a sleeved jacket, similar to their outer coat, underneath a collarless, knee-length outer coat.

This "undergarment" became waist-length around 1730, and then lost its sleeves around 1760. It was probably at this time that the word "waistcoat" was coined, which then evolved into what we now call a "vest."

Some waistcoats from this period, worn as "undergarments," were apparently made of thin fabric and were unlined. The 1735 Linen Coat is based on these earlier sleeved waistcoats, made from a slightly thin plain weave linen.

It is a jacket that can be worn over a shirt or T-shirt.
