The origin of this jacket is a textile born from the intersection of traditional Spanish immigrant techniques and Native American culture, a tradition that has continued for 400 years in Chimayo, New Mexico.
A long-established workshop still weaves thick wool rugs on hand looms, and VINTAGE pieces are given a fresh, JELADO-esque design with all accessories made from domestic deerskin, a feature not found in antique items.
Its roots lie in the traditional weaving techniques of Spanish immigrants who settled in Chimayo, New Mexico, from the late 17th century. Initially, Spanish-derived stripe patterns were dominant, but later, geometric patterns from local Pueblo and Navajo tribes were incorporated, establishing a unique style.
In the early 20th century, demand for souvenirs from tourists increased, leading to the appearance of vests and jackets sewn from blanket fabric.
MOKI: This rug pattern is one of the oldest designs in Navajo weaving, originating from the Southwestern United States. Its history is deeply rooted in cultural exchange with the Spanish and Pueblo peoples. Some of the threads are hand-dyed by Irvin using natural dyes.
In Chimayo, New Mexico, "Rio Grande weaving" has been practiced for 400 years since the Spanish colonial era. Centinela Traditional Arts is the legitimate successor to this tradition.
Supporting the workshop are Irvin, a Living National Treasure, and his wife Lisa Trujillo, a master of dyeing. While preserving the 8-generation lineage dating back to the 17th century, Lisa has diligently researched natural dyes, resurrecting ancient colors that were almost lost. What they weave stitch by stitch on foot-powered looms is the very history of the land. Their signature Chimayo vests embody the tranquility of sacred ground and the pride of the artisan.
T.K GARMENT SUPPLY is a brand that reconstructs vintage workwear and military gear, projecting the functional beauty of the past into the present.
