Iron Ranger is the name of the iron ore mining region in the northern part of Minnesota, USA, where Red Wing is located. Many miners who once worked there wore "capped toe" boots with a piece of leather added to the toe to protect their feet, so the company named these capped toe boots Iron Ranger boots.
This "capped toe" was a design that was widely adopted for work boots in the early 20th century, and in the Red Wing catalog (1910) from the company's early days, 37 of the 33 types of work boots listed were capped toe designs. As time passed, the number of capped toe boots decreased as steel toes, the standard specification for safety shoes today, became more widespread, but some steel toe boots retained the capped toe design, which was originally used to protect and reinforce the toes, until the 1990s. The Iron Ranger is a refinement of the capped toe design that has been passed down to this day.
The last (wooden form) is the No. 8 last, which is widely used for Red Wing round-toe boots. It has a loose design typical of work boots, and is well-known for its ease of wear. The sole uses the Vibram #430 mini lug sole, which has excellent grip.

Many of the boots made with Hawthorne Muleskinner are finished with a buff with wax during the finishing process after shoe manufacturing. Compared to other roughout leathers, this leather has a more attractive aging effect.
