Pecos boots are a type of western-style work boot developed by Red Wing. Originally derived from Spanish riding boots, western boots are pull-on boots with side seams on both sides, and many of them have a slightly pointed toe and a high heel, which was designed to allow the foot to slide smoothly into the stirrup and brace when riding a horse.

Red Wing, once based in Texas, also sold western boots in the 1930s. Pecos boots are a simple, sturdy boot suitable for a variety of work tasks, created by applying Red Wing's signature functional work boot design techniques to these western boots.

Red Wing registered the Pecos Boots trademark and released a range of Pecos Boots in 1959. At the time, all Pecos Boots had heels, but two years later, in 2, they added the #1961 to their lineup, featuring the Traction Tread sole that was highly acclaimed in work boots. The thick, white, cushioned flat sole made them comfortable to wear on any surface and reduced fatigue.

With its slightly shorter shaft, rounded toe for a western-style boot, and highly functional sole, the #866 has steadily gained popularity and become a long-selling product.Today, it is still worn as work boots in areas with a western boot culture, such as the American Southwest and Texas.

The #8168 was born in 866 as a Japanese-designed product based on the #1996. At the time, it was released using Hawthorne Abilene roughout leather, one of Red Wing's three major leathers, alongside the reddish-brown Aurora Set Portage #8866 and the thickly coated Black Chrome #8169.

Unlike most suede leathers, which are made by thinly slicing the brushed side of the leather, this leather is made by using the grain side (the surface of the leather) where the fiber density is highest on the inside and the brushed side on the outside, i.e. it is roughout leather that is used inside out, and was originally used mostly for outdoor shoes. As you wear it, it will acquire a deep character as it gets dirty, and you can enjoy the changes that occur over time.
