Old Style Guernsey Sweater [TM13853]

For hundreds of years, the Guernsey sweater has been a favorite of fishermen and sailors on Guernsey, a small island in the British Crown Dependencies off the coast of Normandy, France. In the past, these sweaters were hand-knitted by women in each family. Most of them had no front or back, flat shoulders, sleeves attached horizontally with gussets under the armpits, and a mock neck (a low turtleneck). Currently, plain medium-gauge sweaters are common, but in the past, patterns such as cables or grids, passed down through each family, were knitted into the upper half, while the lower half was knitted plainly to allow for ease of movement and repair. At The 2 Monkeys, we have recreated the unique style of those old Guernsey sweaters, made with a low gauge that looks hand-knitted and a slightly looser fit.
