In 1910, the household penetration rate of automobiles in the U.S. was a mere 2%. At that time, most people primarily relied on horse-drawn carriages, horses, and bicycles for transportation, and automobiles were a luxury only the wealthy could afford. It was around this period that duster coats, which had been worn since the late 19th century to protect against dust when riding horses or carriages, became fashionable. Since automobiles of that era were completely open-top convertibles with no doors, the tires would kick up dust while driving. Duster coats, which prevented clothes from getting covered in dust, may have been a status symbol for the wealthy who could drive automobiles. Duster coats of that time were mainly long coats made of thin, unbleached linen or cotton. The 2 Monkeys' duster coat is based on a vintage piece owned by Suzuki. It is hand-sewn from densely woven linen. We have tried to reproduce as many details as possible that clearly differ from modern mass-produced goods, such as the distinct pattern, hand-stitched buttonholes, and the tuck at the back hem with a star-shaped embroidery above it. For the fabric, we used a slightly stiff linen-cotton métis (a fabric blended or woven from two or more materials). (The indigo version has indigo-dyed warp threads, which makes for enjoyable fading.)
