The year was 1910. Only 2% of American households owned automobiles. This was an era when the general public mainly traveled by horse-drawn carriage, horse, or bicycle, and only the wealthy could afford to own an automobile. It was around this time that duster coats, worn from the end of the 19th century to protect against dust when riding in a horse-drawn carriage, became popular. Cars at the time were full convertibles without doors, so the tires kicked up dust while driving. Duster coats, which prevented clothes from getting covered in dust, may have been a status symbol for the wealthy who could drive an automobile. Duster coats at the time were mainly long coats made of thin, off-white linen or cotton. The duster coat worn by The 2 Monkeys was owned by Suzuki.
It is based on a vintage piece. It is hand-sewn from tightly woven linen. We have tried to reproduce as many details as possible that are clearly different from modern mass-produced items, such as the pattern, hand-sewn buttonholes, and the tucks at the back hem with the star-shaped embroidery on top. The fabric is a slightly stiff linen-cotton métis (a fabric made by blending or weaving two or more materials). (The indigo has indigo-dyed warp threads, which fades easily.)
