Red Wing first introduced the white, flat, cushioned Traction Tread sole to men's hunting boots in 1952, on the 8-inch boot #877.
These boots were a huge success right from the moment they were released, gaining support not only from hunters but also from workers all over the United States. The sole was quiet and less tiring on the hunting field, and the sole was less likely to get muddy, making it comfortable to walk on ladders and beams at construction sites, as well as on stones and wood. The design avoided seams near the sole to prevent water from entering, the tongue was sewn all the way to the opening to prevent mud and water from entering, and the moccasin-type toe (moc toe) that hunters had long favored also led to practicality and ease of wear in the work field.
The excellent functionality of the #877 is also effective when worn in modern city streets. The sole has cushioning that makes it easy to walk for long periods of time without getting tired, and there are no stitches around the foot, making it comfortable to wear.
The pattern of the #877 (the design of the leather parts before they are sewn together) has not been changed at all to this day. This also shows how highly refined the shoes were from the beginning.
The #877 is Red Wing's best-selling boot of all time, and can be said to be a shoe that represents America. Just as jeans, which were originally workwear, have become a fashion item that represents America, work boots are shoes that represent America.
The #877 was made of brown oiled leather called Oro Russet from the 1950s until the 1990s, but over its long history, the color has changed several times, sometimes with a bright gold tone and sometimes with a strong reddish hue. In 2014, the leather was returned to its original oil-rich orange-brown color, and the current Oro Legacy leather was created. The raw hides with a particularly smooth grain were selected, and the grain was dyed after tanning without any painting, resulting in a leather with a natural texture. The more you wear it, the more it will develop its character and the deeper its flavor will become.
