In 1939, after Finnish soldiers repelled Soviet forces on skis, the U.S. Army recognized the need for a mountain unit. In 1941, the 87th Mountain Infantry Battalion was formed, later becoming the 10th Mountain Division, and underwent rigorous training in Colorado. In 1945, during the Battle of Mount Belvedere in Italy, the ski troopers' night attack succeeded, taking the German forces by great surprise. This organization was born on July 13, 1943, at an Army base built in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, known as "Camp Hale." This parka features a reversible design with an OD-colored outer shell for forests and grasslands, and a lining for camouflage in snowy mountains. This "M-42 Parka Ski Reversible" is based on one of the many specifications, specifically a pullover type with a front zipper and no fur around the collar. While faithfully retaining the original specifications, the hood has been enlarged, and the length adjusted to be longer to function as a rain parka. The fabric used is "CASE, SLEEPING, BAG M-1945 WATER REPELLENT," which, as the name suggests, is the outer cover of a sleeping bag. Although it says M-1945, it was adopted in 1945 and continued to be manufactured and used for many years thereafter. As indicated by "WATER REPELLENT," this cotton plain weave fabric was treated for water repellency. In this product, the different fabric colors are due to individual fabric variations, and even within a single piece, different parts were made from different colored fabrics. Based on this, the design intentionally combines parts of different colors. Although the fabric was originally water-repellent, since it dates back to 1945, the treatment itself has deteriorated over time, so the product has been re-treated for water repellency.
