Following our previous collaboration, we once again commissioned GYM Inc. to fully reproduce the "Wolf Pattern" Cowichan, considered the pinnacle of vintage Cowichan sweaters, as a hand-knitted piece.
A Cowichan sweater is a thick knit made from chunky yarn, characterized by bold patterns featuring animal motifs and geometric designs. It is a traditional knit with a rich history and culture, originating from the sweaters worn by the Cowichan people who lived on Vancouver Island, Canada. This piece uses 100% Shetland-style wool yarn. The fibers have a lot of crimp, allowing them to hold plenty of air, which gives them extremely high heat retention and also makes them resistant to losing their shape.
For the coloring, we adopted top dyeing, where the raw wool is dyed. By dyeing the cotton (raw wool) in its raw state, the dye thoroughly penetrates to the core, making it fade-resistant while preserving the natural texture of the wool.
The knitting is done with six strands of yarn, packed as tightly as possible, while retaining the warm texture unique to hand-knitting.
The result is a very well-balanced finish, offering a sturdy, thick feel and a profound presence, while also showcasing the softness and character unique to hand-knitting.
The body is knitted in stockinette stitch, while the collar and placket are switched to garter stitch, giving it the characteristic volume of a Cowichan while maintaining a sleek and beautiful silhouette. The powerful wolf pattern, the substantial knit, and the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.
Each element contributes to an exceptional presence. This Cowichan sweater reproduces the pinnacle of vintage with modern techniques and serious handiwork. It is a knit with an overwhelming aura that instantly becomes the centerpiece of any outfit.
