The 2 Monkeys Métis Duster Coat [TM13451]

In 1910, household car ownership in the United States was a mere 2%. Carriages, horses, and bicycles were the primary modes of transportation for the masses, while automobiles were exclusively owned by a select few wealthy individuals. It was around this time that duster coats, which had been worn since the late 19th century to protect against dust while riding horses and carriages, became popular. As early automobiles were completely open convertibles with no doors, the tires would kick up clouds of dust during driving. Duster coats, designed to prevent clothes from getting covered in dust, might have been a status symbol for the wealthy who could afford to drive cars. At the time, duster coats were primarily long coats made of thin, unbleached linen or cotton. The 2 Monkeys duster coat is based on a vintage piece owned by Suzuki. It is hand-tailored from densely woven linen. We have meticulously reproduced as many details as possible that clearly distinguish it from modern mass-produced items, such as the unique pattern, hand-stitched buttonholes, tucks at the back hem, and the star-shaped embroidery above them. For the fabric, we used a linen-cotton metis (a fabric made from a blend or mix of two or more materials) with a slight firmness.
