 ～COLIMBO explanation～
This jacket is based on the summer flight jackets worn by aviators on naval vessels in the Pacific until the early 1950s, when the era of propeller aircraft was ending. It is made from a more robust, highly twisted chino cloth than the original.
In military jackets, the definition of "summer" strongly implies use in warm climate areas rather than strictly during the summer season, and from the 1960s onwards, the term "Tropical" became more common.
The U.S. Navy's summer flight jackets initially started with the M-421 jacket, which had a nearly identical design to other climate-specific jackets in the Mil-Spec M400 series (such as the M-422 intermediate, M-444 winter light, and M-445 winter heavy).
It featured traditional action pleats on the back, and similarly complex and meticulously patterned sleeves and small underarm components, making it a luxuriously crafted piece adhering to the traditional format of menswear.
Rapid advancements in aviation technology after the war brought changes to aviators' equipment, with the most prominent gear being the plastic-shell flight helmet. To minimize snagging around the neck when wearing these so-called jet helmets, flight suit collars became smaller and rounded, and summer jackets worn over them were similarly modified with round collars.
