Originally debuting in 1971, the 517 arrived on the market as the world’s very first dedicated bootcut jean, affectionately embraced by consumers of the era under the "Saddleman Boot Jeans" moniker. Tracing its roots back to 1969, the specific model number was initially introduced within the STA-PREST lineup before finally being executed in raw denim for its official 1971 release.
As vintage collectors well know, the denim 517's debut directly intersected with the historical factory transition from the iconic uppercase "Big E" red tabs to the lowercase "small e" variants. Consequently, original "Big E" 517 specimens were manufactured for less than a single year, making them exceptionally scarce, highly-coveted artifacts on the modern vintage market. This release is a line-for-line reproduction of that earliest, rarest 1971 "Big E" archetype.
Despite being designated as a bootcut silhouette, this specific early-pattern 517 is defined by a highly restrained knee contour and a subtle leg opening flare that remains remarkably close to a traditional straight-leg profile. This structural nuance sets it completely apart from the aggressively flared 517 iterations of the later 1970s, yielding a beautifully clean, grown-up leg line with immense styling versatility. We have faithfully duplicated every single construction quirk unique to this fleeting production window - including the period-correct chain-stitched hems alongside the distinct yellow contrast stitching running along the coin pocket trim and the interior outseam edges. No matter how minute or hyper-specific the historical detail, our engineering leaves no stone unturned.
For the material, we utilized our premier LAST RESORT Shiro-Tag (White Tag) denim fabric. Engineered with a natural, built-in stretch profile that quickly molds to the body, this premium textile allows you to fully enjoy an authentic vintage atmosphere without compromising on modern, next-to-skin comfort. By precisely targeting the absolute genesis of the bootcut genre during its rarest "Big E" phase, we have created a garment engineered to resonate deeply with the most discerning denim purists. From the historical silhouette and tailoring configurations to the rich hand feel of the fabric, we invite you to experience the absolute apex of heritage denim reproduction.
