Coureur des bois, men running through the forest
In the 17th and 18th centuries, when the vast lands of the interior of North America were French territory, some men crossed the Atlantic Ocean from France and traveled to the interior of America with Native Americans. They traded European goods for Native American furs, especially beaver pelts, and hunted together with the Native Americans, learning about their lifestyle and culture, wearing moccasins and paddling canoes, while living in the forests and wilderness.
Their journey was harsh and they were constantly at risk of death. They could die from illness, injury, or the freezing cold of winter, or be attacked by hostile Indian tribes. But they left their homes and traveled thousands of kilometers through the unexplored interior of North America. They fled the stifling feeling brought about by the class society of their native France, and sought freedom and adventure. In French, they were called Coureur des bois, or "those who gallop through the woods."
The 2 Monkeys' Autumn/Winter 2022 clothing line features designs inspired by their adventurous lifestyle.
The design was inspired by the jackets worn by French people who traveled to the uncivilized interior of North America (French Louisiana) in the 18th century to trade fur with Native Americans.
The jackets worn by Europeans at that time when they ventured into forests and fields were military uniforms or similar.
It was a time when royal authority was strong, and clothing styles were decided by the royal court and became the style of the time, but military uniforms followed that style while also enhancing functionality. It was a time when clothes were sewn and tailored by hand one by one. Even military uniforms had sleeves that were bent at the elbow, armholes with lines that considered movement, and waists that were made with care.
It had elaborate details to fit the curves of the wearer's body, such as four pieces sewn together at the back to create a tighter fit, and pleats and gussets at the hem.
The “Courrier des Bois” Voyager Jacket was designed to resemble the clothes that French people traveling to French Louisiana at the time would have worn, incorporating details from the clothing of that time, while still being easy to match with today's casual styles.
The material is French pique.
The olive khaki is made from a particularly thick piqué material, while the navy stripe is made from a slightly thicker, more flexible piqué material.
