The Classic Button-Down Shirt: Madison - Flagship Store

Thank you for visiting us today.

Our standard Madison shirts are back in stock, so this time we'll talk about the button-down shirt, a staple of American casual wear.

The origin of the button-down shirt is said to be in 19th-century Britain.

Polo players (equestrian athletes) who were bothered by their shirt collars flapping around while riding commissioned tailors to create buttons to hold the collars in place, which led to the birth of the characteristic buttoned collar.

Because of its origins in the sport of polo, it pairs perfectly with casual styles, such as wearing it unironed with rolled-up sleeves. If ironed, it can also suit a slightly more formal style.

Button-down shirts were later loved by students of prestigious schools on the East Coast of America and became a classic item in American casual wear. They were also favored by jazz musicians of the 1950s, such as Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan, and became all the rage as a cutting-edge style of the time.

This Madison shirt is made with crisp Oxford fabric woven from American combed yarn, with a focus on "MADE IN JAPAN" craftsmanship.

This is a chic black. While button-down shirts were originally popular in standard colors like white and blue, colored versions became popular after the 1950s.

Michihiko Kei's IVY STYLE Lecture / Unraveling "BLACK IVY"

Ivy is known as a style of the white upper class, but in recent years, "Black Ivy," a style created by black people who reimagined Ivy, has been gaining attention.

I'd like to try it out soon.

Previously, sizes ranged from XS (34) to XXL (44), but due to high demand from larger individuals, we have started offering size 50 this season.
