What is "Cowichan" in a Cowichan sweater?

It originates from the traditional winter clothing of the "Cowichan people," an indigenous tribe living on Vancouver Island in Canada.

Sweaters and cardigans knitted from thick wool with high oil content are water-repellent and offer excellent warmth.

Cowichans have a unique texture and weight, and are hand-knitted with characteristic geometric patterns or animal designs such as the thunderbird (a divine bird of the Cowichan people) and reindeer.

 

 

This product is a collaboration with GIM.

"Grass bag," produced using GIM's manufacturing background,

is based on a 1960s Cowichan knit.

 

Speaking of 1960s Cowichan knits, they include designs such as

wolves, carp, thunderbirds, totem poles,

reindeer, and also classic cars, bowling, and snow patterns.

 

Jelado's "Grass bag" features a bison pattern,

which is rarely seen even in vintage pieces.

 

 

While reproducing the bison pattern, and to enhance the vintage roughness and the unique "atmosphere" that can only be achieved with hand-knitting,

we use a blend of 8 strands, with half (4 strands) being *recycled yarn

used randomly to create variations in color and thickness, producing a vintage feel.

 

 

From these two images, you can probably see the color variation created by using recycled yarn.

 

About *recycled yarn:

It is yarn made by collecting and reusing discarded wool from spinning mills. It's a blended yarn of 97% recycled wool and 3% polyester, with a base of hand-knitted plain stitch. However, by incorporating garter stitch in certain parts, we've created a unique texture.

 

The Grass bag has just arrived, and as explained above, by using recycled wool with color variations,

it's an item that already has a distinctive character even at the product stage.

Furthermore, its appearance will change with repeated wear,

so for those in their late 30s to 50s who used to read the fashion magazine "Boon" in the 90s,

this product will evoke a sense of "nostalgia," and we strongly encourage them to try it on.

 

It goes well with denim, of course, but I personally recommend pairing it with chinos,

so please come to the store and try it on.

The 407EXX, from size L, features a split back (T-BACK) design.

 

Among customers who can wear size M,

some intentionally choose a size larger,

like size L, because it features a split back.

 

The 301EXX, which I'll introduce later, is similar,

with a denim fabric designed to have intentional slubs in the yarn,

resulting in a highly uneven texture.

It will develop prominent vertical fading.

The Last Resort black tag, which was released a year ago the other day.

 

We, the WEST staff, have also

worn and nurtured them carefully.

As you can see from the images,

the vertical fading is quite evident.

 

Looking at the denim we wore,

the fading is different, but that's one of the charms of denim.

 

The 'Black Tag' series

is positioned as 1940s XX fabric.

 

While it's a very dark denim,

until the end of the war in 1945, the factory was producing 'S506XX, S501XX,'

and there was leftover fabric from these.

 

With the lifting of material controls issued during the war,

the pre-war details returned to both tops and bottoms,

but it didn't happen immediately, and it took several years for the fabric to change.

 

The model with the new fabric is the late 1947 type.

 

Because this black tag denim is from the transitional period before the fabric changed,

it is a very dark denim fabric.

 

The early 1947 model is JELADO's 407EXX / 301EXX.
