~NO2, NO3 Denim~

 

LEVI'S had NO.2 and NO.3 denim.

 

 

To tell you upfront, I personally have never seen NO.3 denim.

I know there is a model called 333, but I think most people don't even know about the existence of NO.3 denim.

 

 

So, what are NO.2 and NO.3?

These indicate an economy version.

 

 

The "XX" in 501XX stands for "Extra Exceed."

It means it was made with the highest quality, durable fabric, so it has the "XX" notation. 501XX → NO.1.

To compete with other companies, LEVI'S introduced NO.2, and later NO.3 denim, from the 1890s to 1943, as an economy version with lighter-weight denim and lighter dye.

 

 

The patches for that era were leather, but for NO.2 and NO.3, they were linen patches.

This also shows how they differentiated it from NO.1.

 

 

 

 

The main model numbers for NO2 are:

201 (denim)

211 (pullover shirt)

213 (denim jacket)

214 (coverall)

 

 

This time, I will introduce three jackets from this selection.

 

 

 

The first one is a 213 from around 1928?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Given this era, some of you may have already noticed that there is no flap yet.

(Flaps were added around 1923-28)

 

 

And the pocket is located on the abdomen, not the chest...

This is what is known as a down pocket.

 

 

I estimate it to be from around 1928 because the company logo is on the buttons,

but since there are documents that identify it as 1922, I've written "around 1928?".

This era features a pocket with a flap.

The flap is angular, not rounded, and the pocket is pentagonal.

 

The buttons are "doughnut buttons," and there's a cinch back on the rear.

 

Today, it's common for these to be in the hundreds of thousands of yen.

I used to own one, and I bought it for 300,000 yen at the time, so it's now worth more than three times that.

 

Of course, the price goes up significantly depending on the condition and the remaining color.

It's a rare jacket now.

 

 

 

S213 War Model

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Regarding this model, besides the absence of a flap,

the buttons changed from five to four, a detail change similar to what is seen in the NO.1 denim S506XX.

 

The S213 is a model that was discontinued soon after World War II began,

so few were produced, making it a rare piece.

Among the ones introduced today, it's the second rarest after the down-pocket version from around 1928?

 

 

Although it's an economy version, NO2 denim is rare in terms of existing pieces.

In recent years, its value has risen significantly,

and it's now a vintage item that's harder to acquire than before.
