Today's topic is "Paper Patches."

 

 

Does anyone know why the leather patch was changed to a paper patch?

Those who know must really love VINTAGE LEVI'S.

 

 

Speaking of denim, until '54, it was a leather patch made from deer hide.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

However, from '55, the leather patch detail changed to a paper patch.

 

 

 

 

 

 

In 1954, the 501ZXX was released.

This model later became the 502.

It gained a lot of attention as the first zipper-type 501, but to put it simply, it was considered a failure.

 

 

Why is it called a failure?

At the time, LEVI'S used "shrink-to-fit" fabric,

meaning it would shrink and fit the wearer's body after being washed.

 

When denim is washed and then dried, if too much moisture is squeezed out,

the fibers tighten up and shrinkage occurs.

 

With the widespread use of dryers in America at the time,

using a dryer after washing often caused the denim to shrink considerably,

altering its silhouette.

 

 

This often led to zipper rail damage,

and there were many complaints about the 501ZXX at the time.

This model would later become the 502, which used preshrunk (shrink-proof processed) fabric.

 

This shrinkage not only damaged zipper rails but also caused complaints about leather patch shrinkage.

This led to the change in detail to a paper patch that wouldn't shrink or harden when washed.

But just one last thing…

 

 

I'd like to introduce a jacket that makes you think, "That exists?"

If it were leather, you wouldn't see the fabric showing through when the patch shrinks…

 

 

 

 

 

 

The image above shows a patch that was on an S501XX. (It's not from the jacket introduced here.)

The paper-like patch clearly has the "S" notation before the product number,

which identifies it as a wartime model.

 

 

 

 

 

This jacket's back cinch has a file instead of a lily,

so it can be identified as a late-war model.

 

 

While this is purely speculative, was it a trial to change from leather patches to paper patches due to material restrictions?

 

Or were there criticisms from animal welfare organizations because leather patches used deer hide?

 

Or is it something else entirely?

 

We don't know the answer, but such things do exist.

 

It's interesting, isn't it?

The allure of VINTAGE is that no matter how much you dig, there's always more to discover, so please do some research yourselves.
