The Allure of Mexican Rings! Let's Learn Together!
Share
Good evening.
This is Komori from the Ebisu store.
Thank you for visiting us again today.
And so, a new month, September, has begun.
The hot weather may continue for a while, so please take care of yourselves.
This time, I'd like to talk about "Mexican rings." Whether you're familiar with them or hearing about them for the first time, I hope you'll find them interesting.
I also don't know much about Mexican rings, so I hope to learn about their charm through this blog.
These are rugged rings known overseas as "Mexican Biker Rings," featuring motifs like skulls on top. In our country, they are called "Mexican rings" and are popular as a type of silver accessory. JELADO also offers its own original designs.
Historically, these rings originated in small towns near the Mexican border and gained popularity in American biker communities, spreading their name worldwide. Accessories favored by bikers are now supported by a wide range of people.
The materials for Mexican rings initially included nickel, bronze, and brass for early biker rings. Later, metals like steel and titanium were also used, evolving with considerations for durability and cost. However, they still maintain their unique appeal by using silver and copper.
Common motifs for the rings include horses and horseshoes, animals, skulls, sugar skulls, iron crosses, Indians, Aztec civilization, and Kokopelli (fairies). With many attractive designs, it's also fun to find accessories that suit your personal style.
I'd like to introduce some of the items available at JELADO.
Mexican ring Skull13 (Skull 13) [SG94613] Price: ¥36,300 (tax included)
First, the base of this Mexican ring is silver, and the top and sides are brass (an alloy of copper and zinc). While many vintage pieces use copper, copper tends to be less strong and can chip or break with use. Therefore, JELADO uses brass, which has higher strength and develops a better patina with wear. As shown in the image, it features a helmeted skull and crossbones, with horses and hooves on both sides. The back of the ring is engraved with "JELADO" and "Starry Gate." By using a thick brass base over silver and crafting the skull to create a strong impact, it achieves a very vintage feel. This skull ring has an overwhelming presence.

When worn, it has quite a presence.
Skulls definitely appeal to a man's heart.

JELADO Mexican ring Maria (Maria) [SG94615] Price: ¥38,500 (tax included)
Next up is the Mexican ring with a Virgin Mary motif. White coloring is applied around the Virgin Mary by melting acrylic resin. This technique was also used in original Mexican rings from that era. Lily patterns are depicted on the sides. Lilies are used in Christianity as a symbol of purity. The words "JELADO" and "Starry Gate" are also engraved on the back of the ring. This ring combines presence and elegance, making it a recommended item for those who want to enjoy its aging process or seek a striking ring.

The Virgin Mary design is somehow mystical.
This ring also has a presence different from the skull design.

Finally, we have the Mexican ring with an Indian feather motif. The feather part is colored using acrylic resin. Using acrylic resin provides vibrant color and, as this specification was also used in the original rings of the time, it creates an even more vintage feel. Please note that the color on the acrylic resin will chip off with use, but this is also part of its vintage charm. As shown in the image, an owl is depicted on the side. Owls are revered among Native Americans as prophets who foretell danger, and in Mexico, they are considered symbols of good fortune that protect homes and families due to their nocturnal vision. The words "JELADO" and "Starry Gate" are also engraved. By using a thick brass base over silver and crafting the skull to create a strong impact, it achieves a very vintage feel.
Mexican ring Indian (Indian) [SG94614] Price: ¥36,300 (tax included)

I also learned about the history of Mexican rings, which was quite educational.
It's enjoyable just looking for designs you like, but wearing them and seeing how they develop character over time is also one of the pleasures.
Even if you're not specifically looking for a ring, I encourage you to come and see the original JELADO Mexican ring designs in person.
Please consider them as an accent to your fashion.
