The classic Madison shirt. Today, we'd like to talk about the button-down shirt, a staple of American casual wear.
The button-down shirt is said to have originated in 19th-century England.
Polo players (equestrians) who were bothered by their shirt collars flapping around while riding asked their tailor to custom-make buttons to hold the collar in place, giving birth to the distinctive buttoned collar.
Its origin in the sport of polo makes it a perfect match for casual styles, such as wearing it unironed with rolled-up sleeves. It can also be ironed for a more formal look.
The button-down shirt was later loved by students at prestigious East Coast American schools and became a staple of American casual wear. It was also favored by 1950s jazz musicians like Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan, becoming a cutting-edge style of its time.
This Madison shirt is made with crisp Oxford fabric using American combed yarn, with a commitment to "MADE IN JAPAN."
This one is a chic black.
