Chromexcel leather is a representative leather from Horween, a long-established tannery (leather tanning company) in Chicago that has been in business for over 100 years.

So, today, I would like to introduce this thin belt, which goes perfectly with classic pants, while delving deeper into the Horween company and Chromexcel leather!

BUTTON WORKS is one of Japan's leading specialists in metal parts such as buttons and belt buckles. This belt was completed with the cooperation of BUTTON WORKS.

It uses a custom-made brass buckle with a dull gold shine for the 16mm ultra-thin belt. The belt loop is made of iron, but it is finished with a matte brass plating to give it a unified look.

Four-split snap buttons, an intentionally old-style design, are used to secure the buckle and belt loops. Furthermore, leather reinforcement is added to the inside, demonstrating meticulous craftsmanship in every detail.

About the ultimate Chromexcel leather produced by Horween Company

And for the leather, which is the key to this belt, we have adopted the Chromexcel leather from the Horween Company mentioned earlier.

Horween Company is a long-established tannery founded in 1905 by Isadore Horween in Chicago, USA, and has been in business for over 100 years.

Among Horween's leathers, Chromexcel leather is considered particularly special.

The secret seems to lie in its proprietary tanning and finishing processes.

As the name Chromexcel suggests, Chromexcel leather is tanned using a chemical method called chrome tanning in the initial process.

The bluish leather in the photo is in a state commonly referred to as "wet blue," which is characteristic of leather after chrome tanning.

And it is from the next step, called "re-tanning," that the unique charm of Chromexcel leather can be said to originate.

Using a secret recipe that combines extracts from tree bark and other natural substances, leather that has been chrome-tanned once is then re-infused with very heavy vegetable tannins.

The advantage of combining chrome tanning and vegetable tanning is that it allows for the best of both tanning methods.

Generally, chrome-tanned leather is strong, flexible, and soft.

On the other hand, vegetable tanning retains the leather's texture, is highly malleable, and allows for enjoyable aging.

Yes, the combination tanning of chrome and vegetable used in Chromexcel possesses the advantages of both.

Next is the "hot stuffing" process, where oils and greases are filled into the tanned leather.

Again, a secret blend of oils and waxes is used here.

And it is slowly infused into the leather over time.

It is through this process of filling the leather with oils and greases that one of Chromexcel's greatest characteristics, known as "pull-up," is imparted.

"Pull-up" refers to the property of leather where the oils within it move and change its appearance. This characteristic is easier to grasp by pushing the leather from the back with a finger.

The base is now complete, and all that remains is dyeing.

Horween uses a traditional method called "hilly dyeing," where only the surface of the leather is hand-painted. Water-based aniline dyes are used for coloring.

Since only the surface is dyed, it is in a state commonly referred to as "tea core."

The surface color will gradually fade with wear.

Combined with the change in appearance due to the movement of oil, a characteristic of "pull-up leather," it becomes a leather that can be enjoyed for its significant aging.

It is through this incredibly complex process that the indescribable expression of this belt is created.
