BUTTON WORKS is one of Japan's leading specialists in metal parts such as buttons and belt buckles. This belt was completed with the cooperation of BUTTON WORKS.

It features a brass buckle with a dull golden shine, custom made for the 16mm ultra-thin belt.The belt loops are made of iron, but as a final touchIt is finished with matte brass plating to create a unified look throughout.

We deliberately used old-style four-piece snap buttons to fasten the buckles and belt loops.The inside is lined with leather, and every detail has been carefully crafted.

And the key leather used in this belt is the aforementioned Horween Chromexcel leather.

Horween is a long-established tannery in Chicago, USA, founded in 1905 by Isidore Horween.

Among the Horween companies,Chromexcel leather is considered to be particularly special.

The secret seems to lie in the secret tanning and finishing processes.

As the name suggests, Chromexcel leather is first tanned using a chemical process called chrome tanning.

The bluish colored leather shown in the photo is in a state commonly known as "wet blue," which is characteristic of leather after chrome tanning.

The next step, called "re-tanning," is what gives Chromexcel leather its unique appeal.

Using a secret recipe that combines bark extract and other natural substances, the leather is once chrome-tanned and reloaded with extremely heavy vegetable tannins.

The advantage of combining chrome tanning and vegetable tanning is that it allows you to take advantage of the advantages of both tanning methods.

Generally, chrome-tanned leather is characterized by its strength, suppleness, and softness.

On the other hand, vegetable tanning has the advantage of retaining the texture of leather, being highly plastic, and allowing you to enjoy the changes that occur over time.

Yes, the chrome and vegetable combination tanning method used by Chromexcel gives you the best of both worlds.

The next step is "hot stuffing", a process in which the tanned leather is filled with oil and grease.

Here too, a secretly-formulated mixture of oils and waxes is used.

Then, over a period of time, the material is slowly filled into the leather.

This infusion of oil and grease gives the leather a property called "pull-up," one of Chromexcel's greatest features.

"Pull-up" is the property of the leather changing its appearance as the oil moves within the leather. You can easily see this by pressing the back of the leather with your finger.

The base is complete so far, all that's left is dyeing.

Horween uses a traditional method called "hill dyeing," where the leather surface is painted by hand, and uses water-based aniline dyes.

Since only the surface is dyed, it has what is known as a "brown core."

The surface color will gradually fade with wear.

Combined with the change in appearance caused by the movement of oil, which is a characteristic of "pull-up leather," this makes it a leather that changes over time and is very enjoyable to watch.

It is through this incredibly complicated process that the belt is given its indescribable appearance.
