The #9268, released in 2014, features the upper pattern of the #2268 engineer boot from the 80s and 90s (a tapered shaft design known internally as a stovepipe) and black collected grain leather with a brown crust (commonly known as a brown core). The #9268 features a steel toe, following in the footsteps of the #2268, a safety boot with a steel toe since its first release in the 1960s.
However, from 1996 to 97, there was a model called the #968, which replaced the steel toe of the #2268 with a resin toe cap. Just like in the American work shoe market at the time, there are many users in Japan today who do not need steel toe caps or who find the steel toe caps do not fit their feet well and are unable to wear them comfortably.
The #2966 engineer boots were released in 2016 to address these needs. The toe cap of the #9268 has been changed from steel to a soft resin material. While maintaining the shape of the toe, the toe cap conforms to the shape of the foot. It can be said to be a reproduction of the #968 boots from the late 90s.
To celebrate Red Wing's 120th anniversary, the engineer boots were revived in response to strong requests from Red Wing Japan customers. For the reintroduction, model #2966 was chosen, which maintains the timeless character of the engineer boots while emphasizing comfort to suit the modern fashion market.
The "Black Klondike" leather used in these boots develops a unique texture with wear, developing deep wrinkles on the instep and shaft, scratches on the toe, and revealing the brown interlining underneath the black leather. These Engineer boots, which have the distinctive features of work boots, are sure to become even more beloved by those who wear them.
